Journalists\nhave been challenged to live by example and uphold the Christian faith in the\nmedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The advice\ncame from Mr. Lucky Ogwu, the Public Relations Officer at the Bible Society of\nNigeria (BSN), at the monthly fellowship of the Journalists For Christ (JFC)\nlast weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ogwu, who\nwas represented the General Secretary of the BSN, Rev. (Dr.) Dare Ajiboye at\nthe fellowship, also enjoined Christian journalists to practice the Word of God\nas they have professed because any deviation from it could incur God\u2019s judgment\non them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking on\nthe theme: The Biblical Journalist, Ogwu said, Christian journalists have the\nresponsibility of defending the faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ogwu said,\nas a journalist for Christ, one has double faith to defend; the ethics of\njournalism and secondly, the profession as a Christian. Ordinarily according to\nhim, journalists are supposed to be flawless when it comes to doing their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, \u201cAs a Journalists For Christ member, you have your faith to defend in two ways; faith to defend in your reports when it comes to accountability, truth, accuracy, balanced and fairness. The second is that you must not be seen participating in anything that conflicts with your confession as a Christian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also\nexplained that journalists should take responsibility and be accountable.\n\u201cTruth should not just be on the surface of a matter, but get the facts,\nscrutinise it and use it to build confidence and trust of the people,\u201d he\nadvised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ogwu noted that,\nthough human beings are naturally imperfect in words, but if journalists who\nare supposed to be the salt to the unbelieving ones begins to say what is\nmorally wrong, he\u2019ll be judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou must\nuphold your status as the salt. You\u2019ll be judged if your dignity as a Christian\ncommands less respects; when a journalist says things that is not edifying\namong unbelieving journalists, after confessing Christ as Lord, he\u2019ll be\njudged,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also said\nthat a journalist should not backbite or backstab his colleagues, as doing this\nwill discourage the Holy Spirit, but called for the support of kingdom works as\na means to challenge and command God\u2019s possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou can\nchallenge and command possibility with kingdom works, such as soul winning,\ngiving to the less privileged, attending to people\u2019s needs and visiting IDP\ncamps. Also, characters like backbiting or backstabbing should be discouraged\namong you because; it grieves the presence of the Holy Spirit among the\nbrethren,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He enjoined journalists not to envy wicked people but look unto Jesus and pray always and honour leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
