What does running through a troop or leaping over a wall have to do with journalism? For reporters in the field, securing exclusive stories, getting the right angles, or uncovering deeper truths often feels like a battle.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
John McCandlish Phillips, a former New York Times journalist and a committed Christian, once addressed the similarity in a lecture titled Faith in the Daily News Chase. Speaking to journalism students, he said many assumed he had an edge because of his writing skill or reporting technique. But in truth, his greatest strength came from a deeper place.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI prayed silently on the way to nearly all assignments,\u201d he shared. \u201cAsking the Lord to help me, to guide me, to get me below the surface, to give me all the content I needed for a first-rate report.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Phillips likened his experience to that of young David in Scripture\u2014facing seemingly insurmountable odds, yet overcoming by faith. David didn\u2019t rely on his strength alone when he said, \u201cBy my God, I run through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall\u201d (Psalm 18:29).<\/div>\n

As Christian journalists, we too are not alone on the beat. Each story, each interview, each deadline is an opportunity to lean on God for strength, insight, and wisdom. Our success is not by might or by power, but by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).<\/div>\n

Where do you need to trust God more in your assignments? Are you relying solely on your training and instincts, or are you inviting Him into your daily news chase?<\/div>\n

Prayer:<\/div>\n
Lord, as I go about my work today, help me to trust You. Guide my thoughts, sharpen my eyes, and give me grace to uncover truth with integrity and compassion. Remind me that I am not alone on the beat\u2014You are with me. Amen.<\/div>\n
