Justina Asishana<\/a>, Niger State Correspondent of The Nation Newspaper in Nigeria, attending the Internet Governance Forum in Oslo last week was a dream come true for some reasons.<\/p>\nOne is having the opportunity to meet and discuss with Maria Ressa, a renowned journalist and co-founder of Rappler, a popular news website in the Phillipines. Ressa is also a Nobel Peace Prize Winner for her efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.<\/p>\n
“Meeting and listening to Maria Ressa at the Internet Governance Forum was very rewarding…I mean, I have read about this woman a lot. I keep reading her works, her challenges, how she navigates her challenges with the government and how she works in combating fake news,” Asishana wrote in her Facebook post about the global conference where she also moderated a session.<\/p>\n
Her participating in the conference like other major media gatherings she has attended in the past and encounter with the Nobel Peace winner is a confirmation of how Asishana has diligently gone about her work despite not being stationed in one of the media capitals in Nigeria like Lagos and Abuja.<\/p>\n
Her outstanding performance at her Minna base and other parts of Niger has earned her many recognitions, including national and international awards, fellowships and other opportunities that distinguish her from many of her colleagues.<\/p>\n
The reward for diligence according to Proverbs 22:29 is recognition and opportunity to operate at the highest level of any work we do as Asishana’s experience has proven.<\/p>\n
Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NIV) states that “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Not withstanding the efforts she has put into excelling, Asishana, World Health Organisation\/ International Centre for Journalists Fellow, acknowledges that there is God in her story.<\/p>\n
“It has been God all the way in my story. When God shows up, He does not fail in His promises to us, but a lot is also on us to put in the work. Even if we are not seeing the impact, we should believe that impact is being made. This is the reason why I apply for several opportunities within my areas of interest,” the Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) Fellow stated.<\/p>\n
As Christian journalists, God wants us to be diligent to make our calling and election sure 2 Peter 1: 10<\/p>\n
He wants us to \u201cMake it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands\u2026 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders.\u201d
