{"id":589,"date":"2021-02-22T16:50:34","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T16:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalistsforchrist.org\/?p=589"},"modified":"2021-02-23T08:38:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T08:38:06","slug":"journalism-as-a-sacred-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalistsforchrist.org\/index.php\/2021\/02\/22\/journalism-as-a-sacred-calling\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalism as a sacred calling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Message by Vice President, Mrs Ugonma Cokey, Deputy Director, Training, Voice of Nigeria (VON) at February 2021 fellowship in Lagos <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does Journalism do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-It makes people\ntake stock of their lives, what they do, say etc.(they hold people into\naccount, both leaders and the led)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Journalism\nprevents the public from being misled by statements, actions, organisations\netc, through the information they give them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-It provides\ncitizens with the information they need to make the best possible decision\nabout their lives, community, society etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sacred:<\/strong> Set apart, made\nholy, consecrated, dedicated, not profane or common, or violated, not secular,\ndesignated or exalted by a divine sanction, possessing the highest title to\nobedience, honour reverence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling is\ndefined by Mariam Webster as a strong inner impulse towards a particular course\nof action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling helps\npeople make positive changes in the world while paying bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To bring this\nwhole thing together we would need to look at a bible text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TEXT<\/strong>: Ephesians 6:5-8<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Servant<\/strong>: Hired to perform\nregular household or other duties and receives compensation. It is one who\nserves another providing help in some manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Employee<\/strong>: An individual\nwho provides labour to a company or another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An employee and\na servant do the same work just difference in name. An employer also gets\ncompensation which is his monthly pay package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does Paul tell servants\/ employees to do in the\npassage above?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Serve with the same dedication with which you will serve God.<\/li><li>Your secular work (Journalism) in this case, is an act of      service to God<\/li><li>Service from the heart even in the absence of the employer; your editor, director, boss etc. meaning no eye service.<\/li><li>The ultimate reward we get as employees is not in the pay packet but given by God Himself.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to ask\nsome questions;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If our job as journalists is secular, what concerns a sacred      God with a secular job? <\/li><li>How come a so-called secular job that is unrelated to a sacred      task be termed \u201ca good thing?\u201d<\/li><li>Why ask people to work for man as if they are working for God?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is simple;\nthey actually work for God literarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your Careers are in fact Ministries.<\/li><li>God is not a purposeless God, if He puts you anywhere as a\n     Christian, it is for a purpose.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I challenge you to find that purpose.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John 17: 16. \u2013 You are not of the world so what makes anything in\nyour life secular?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We serve the interest of heaven as light and salt. Matthew 5:13-16. Let your light so shine in your office, in your work, in your articles, stories, programmes etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-God influences the affairs of s people and a nation using covert\nagents. Would you like to be God\u2019s covert agent like Daniel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-God used Him to change pagan laws, influence their culture and\nconvert them. Daniel provided professional service to a pagan king. Does that\nsound like where you work? So many of God\u2019s people used their positions to\nsecure divine intervention; what are you using or have used yours for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-God influenced the affairs of nations by planting men to deliver professional service with such excellence and distinction that they became the most valuable assets. (Daniel had an excellent spirit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who are you in your workplace, an asset or a liability? A Christian that is heavenly focused without earthly relevance and value? One that bosses don\u2019t want in their sections and heads pray to be redeployed to another section? &nbsp;Or the one always recommended for serious assignments because their heads know they will deliver?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What use are you to your newsroom \/Organisation? Can they depend on\nyou?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel 6:13- 24<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 14- &#8230;greatly displeased with himself&#8230; The king made the law\nbut became unhappy because it was affecting Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;-Set his heart on Daniel to\ndeliver him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 16b- but the King spoke&#8230;will deliver you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 18 &#8230;spent the night fasting&nbsp;\n&#8230;his sleep was taken from him.(Compulsory vigil)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 19 \u2013 He arose early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 20- He cried out to Daniel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vs 23- The king was exceedingly glad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VS 26- Laws changed\/Faith changed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a professional journalist, what changes have you brought to journalism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What impact has your life\/work made?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What laws and policies have you changed through your life and work?<br>\nWhat ethical examples have you shown?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who has your life\/workplace impacted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it actually can with Development reporting, Impact journalism\nand solutions journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you one of those who detach their faith from their work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does Christ exist for you only on Sundays and not part of your work\nMonday to Saturday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why was this theme chosen\nby the JFC exco?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-It is the beginning of the year <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-It will give us the opportunity to examine ourselves and take stock of the way we have been working <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-So we can change what we need to change and be the best this year\nand beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 Corinthians 3:3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you representing Christ in your workplace through hard work, dedication, diligence, sincerity and your lifestyle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Christ were physically standing in front of you, would you work\nthe way you are working? Ecc 9:!0 &#8230;.with all thy might.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are called essential service workers, no leave, no holidays from the news. Journalism is a 247 career, so it\u2019s a full-time ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God has given you a rare office- the newsroom, a rare pulpit, our\nmedium; print, electronic, online. The question is will you use it, make it\nsacred or desecrate it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1 Corinthians 3:13- Every work will be tested by fire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Romans 14:12- Everyman shall give an account of himself <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke 12:48- To whom much is given, much is expected. (We are the\nFourth Estate of the Realm)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone can write or be a broadcaster, what account will you give about your God-given assignment to use your medium and change things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Affirmation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My Career is a sacred calling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am working for God from my heart<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My profession is God\u2019s platform<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wherever I am, there He is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Bishop Wayne Malcolm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can just turn the affirmation into prayer. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Message by Vice President, Mrs Ugonma Cokey, Deputy Director, Training, Voice of Nigeria (VON) at February 2021 fellowship in Lagos What does Journalism do?
