{"id":696,"date":"2021-11-26T14:06:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T14:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalistsforchrist.org\/?p=696"},"modified":"2021-11-30T12:43:48","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:43:48","slug":"how-to-be-an-excellent-journalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalistsforchrist.org\/index.php\/2021\/11\/26\/how-to-be-an-excellent-journalist\/","title":{"rendered":"How to be an excellent journalist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Esther Olaifa<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalists and media professionals in Nigeria have been advised to strive for excellence in their practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media Specialist, Akin Olaniyan made the call at the\nNovember 2021 fellowship of Journalists for Christ held in Lagos on the theme\n\u201cThe pursuit of excellence in the media\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olaniyan a former Deputy Editor of The Punch and Corporate\nCommunication specialist with Zenith Bank said excellence involves moving from\nordinary to extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe all must strive hard to excel in our profession because\nexcellence does not come cheap. We must be ready to pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled how he vigorously searched for training and fellowship\nopportunities to enhance his skills which he got while working at The Punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven when there were no assignments, I go to my beats to get more than the routine statements given at general assignments\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/journalistsforchrist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/fellowship-photo-3-840x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697\"\/><figcaption>Members at the fellowship <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For believers, Olaniyan noted that in the school of\nexcellence, they need to know the person of Jesus and the principles of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must be like Jesus Christ who excelled in all ways. In fact,\nif we are not excelling in our media profession then we should rework our\nsalvation. Prayer is not\nenough, you must be diligent and disciplined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, anyone who desires to be excellent must be\nintentional requiring deliberate planning and actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stating that pursuits involve two things, he said \u201cIf you want to get to the top, you have to get up to go up. If you want to get to the top you have to give up to go to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quoting Habakkuk 2: 2-3 from the amplified version of the Bible, Olaniyan said an excellent professional should know what he or she really wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;(HABAKKUK 2:2-3\nAMP) \u201cAND THE LORD ANSWERED ME AND SAID, WRITE THE VISION AND ENGRAVE IT SO\nPLAINLY UPON TABLETS THAT EVERYONE WHO PASSES MAY [BE ABLE TO] READ [IT EASILY\nAND QUICKLY] AS HE HASTENS BY. FOR THE VISION IS YET FOR AN APPOINTED TIME AND\nIT HASTENS TO THE END [FULFILLMENT]; \u2026 WAIT [EARNESTLY] FOR IT, BECAUSE IT WILL\nSURELY COME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c You need to be determined and settle down to write it what you want to accomplish. Life is war. If you take life serious, life will take you seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it is also\nnecessary to know what being excellent will cost and be willing to pay the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>LUKE\n14:28 (TLB) <sup>28<\/sup> &nbsp;\u201cBUT DON\u2019T BEGIN UNTIL YOU COUNT THE COST. FOR\nWHO WOULD BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF A BUILDING WITHOUT FIRST GETTING ESTIMATES AND\nTHEN CHECKING TO SEE IF HE HAS ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY THE BILLS?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>PROVERBS\n22:29 KJV) <sup>\u201c<\/sup>SEEST THOU A MAN DILIGENT IN HIS BUSINESS? HE SHALL\nSTAND BEFORE KINGS; HE SHALL NOT STAND BEFORE MEAN MEN\u201d<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be excellent, Olaniyan also said there is a need to stand out in the race for excellence and work at it every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;(1 CORINTHIANS 9:25 KJV) \u201cAND EVERY MAN THAT STRIVETH FOR THE MASTERY IS TEMPERATE IN ALL THINGS. NOW THEY DO IT TO OBTAIN A CORRUPTIBLE CROWN, BUT WE AN INCORRUPTIBLE\u201d<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Christian, he added that it is important to be guided by rules and play by them because if you win by breaking the rules; you lose as a believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your result will be like their own if you do what they do,\nso you need to do things differently and count the cost and it\u2019s in the place\nof praying, action that opportunity comes.&nbsp;\nIf you miss yesterday start today, now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, he\nstated that \u201cit\u2019s how you do your job that will determine how you end.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(2 CHRONICLES 27:6 KJV)&nbsp; \u201cSO JOTHAM BECAME MIGHTY BECAUSE HE PREPARED HIS WAYS BEFORE THE LORD HIS GOD\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Esther Olaifa Journalists and media professionals in Nigeria have been advised to strive for excellence in their practice.
