Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. Psalm 127:1(KJV)
While addressing a press conference on the 70th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja Last week, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya said the occasion was an opportunity to “pause to reflect on a remarkable journey characterised by resilience, adaptation, and an unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity.”
He also rightly noted that the 70th milestone provides the union and members “with a unique opportunity to examine our evolution, to chart our trajectory through decades of political upheaval, technological advancement, and societal transformation.”
“As we observe our 70th anniversary, it is a time for reflection and renewal, upholding ethical standards and embracing innovation to forge a brighter future,” the President stated.
But for the grace of the almighty God, all the above accomplishments could not have been achieved. To forge a brighter future which the leadership of the union desires would also depend on divine wisdom for for the executive and their successors.
As the union marks its 70th anniversary, it should also lay it to heart to thank God for clocking this milestone. The executive and members should return to give glory, honour and adoration to God for His mercies that has seen them through the years.
They should remember the admonition of
“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20
We should all pre-commit the union and members to the Lord for the years ahead so that He would continue to guide and prosper us in all our individual and collective professional endeavours.
We should all thank God for the grace he has given us to be journalists and pray that we will fulfill his purpose in the profession.

Our prayer should be “Father, we thank you for what you have done for us in the past, thank you for what you are doing for us presently and thank you for what you will do for us in the future.”
In the years ahead, may we continue to uphold truth, justice, and integrity in our profession, and may Your name be glorified in all we do. Amen.
