Years ago when Adedeji Ademigbuji, a former Brand Correspondent of The Nation Newspaper, was hired as Comms Associate, United Nations World Food Programme for the Maiduguri Area office, I was worried about his safety as he may be exposed to terrorist attacks in the region where he would be working.
Since ‘surviving’ Maiduguri, he has served with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) as a Public Information Officer in Nigeria and Mogadishu, Somalia another volatile city known for terrorist attacks by Al Shabaab and is now in guess where? Kiyv, Ukraine, with the UNOCHA since August 2023 with the devastating war with Russia still on.
One of the hazards of journalism or other communication-related work is that we may be posted to crisis-prone areas where many will prefer not to go, but we have no choice unless we are ready to resign from our appointments.
While we may not have control over where we may be assigned to do our work, what we can count on is God’s assurance of divine protection in our going out and coming in.
“The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7-8
In Genesis 28:15, God said to Jacob “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
When you are worried about your safety wherever your job takes you, don’t forget to read with conviction Psalm 91 to yourself.
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and the noisome pestilence.”
We thank God for preserving the life of Ademigbuji and his co-humanitarian workers through the years and pray he will continue to shield us wherever we go.
