In a LinkedIn post, a news anchor and on-air personality Hakimah Dada wrote about how she copes with the challenging nature of journalism.
“There are moments in journalism when I feel like quitting. The pressure is real—chasing headlines, staying current, meeting deadlines, and still delivering stories accurately, smoothly, and responsibly.
“But by the time that thought comes up, I remember why I chose this path in the first place: the passion.”
Dada’s experience is similar to that of many journalists. While some stay on for the love of the job and the humanity it serves, others choose to step away.
For Christian journalists, however, our coping mechanisms should be anchored even more firmly in fulfilling God’s call and purpose for our lives.
No matter what we face in the profession, we should keep in mind Paul’s admonition in 1 Thessalonians 5:24: “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”
Paul wrote this letter to the new Christians in Thessalonica who needed encouragement as they faced persecution and the temptations of their pagan culture.
Like the Thessalonians, journalists can be assured that when they become overwhelmed by the demands of the job, God—who called them into the profession—can be trusted to see them through.
As the Secretary of the African Christian Journalists Network, George Stewart, also advised in a Facebook post, referencing Psalm 121:1–2: “When you feel drained, do what David did: lift your eyes up—not inward, not around. Strength doesn’t come from the noise, the pressure, or people; it comes from God.”
“He doesn’t sleep. He doesn’t miss a moment. And He doesn’t run out of power when you do.”
In our various editorial assignments, may God Himself—the God of peace, as Paul prayed—sanctify you through and through.
“May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
