As a journalist of the Christian faith, how do you honour Christ in the secular profession of journalism?

This question was one of three addressed by Liberian journalist and media development expert, George Sarwah Stewart, during his message at the February Journalists for Christ International Outreach fellowship held virtually last Saturday.

“It’s not about quoting Scriptures in your stories or protecting religious institutions, but reflecting Christ’s character in your reporting,” Stewart stated.

Christ’s character, according to Stewart, includes loving and promoting the truth. He explained that this can be demonstrated through fact-checking, resisting distortion, rejecting falsehoods, and verifying information—even if it means delaying publication or broadcast.

In several passages in the Gospel of John, Jesus made profound declarations about truth, not merely as a principle, but as His very nature.

In John 14:6, He declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

Jesus also said in John 8:31–32: “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

When Jesus stood before Pilate in John 18:37, He said: “For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.”

For a profession whose cardinal principles include truth and accuracy, being truthful is indeed a major way of honouring Christ in our reporting—especially in an era marked by high levels of misinformation and disinformation across various media platforms.

As ambassadors for Christ in the profession, we must not produce reports that dishonour our Lord and Saviour, but rather those that glorify His name.

Matthew 5:16 reminds us: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In every story we tell and every piece of content we produce, may we remain committed to telling nothing but the truth that honours Christ.
